I've since run each update all the way to the current version (18.something) hoping perhaps new files would overwrite whatever may have been causing the problem. I created another user account on my computer, and when I logged into that, I could open davinci without a problem. Process popped up in task manager and then went away. Since version 17 (or so) when I launch davinci I get the spinning blue wheel and it then goes away.
